The classical Chinese explanation of how acupuncture works is that channels of energy run in regular patterns through the body and over its surface. These energy channels are called meridians, and you can see some of the pattern in the photo of 'Mr. Lee' on your left. Blockage of these meridians can cause pain or disease. Acupuncture unblocks the obstructive meridian or meridians and allows the flow of energy, the "Qi", restoring normal circulation to promote healing.

The modern scientific explanation of how acupuncture works is that needling the acupuncture points stimulates the nervous system to release chemicals in the muscles, spinal cord and brain. These chemicals, or 'neurotrnsmitters', will either change the experience of pain or trigger the release of other chemicals and hormones which influence the body's own internal reulating system.

The improved energy and biochemical balance produced by acupuncture results in stimulating the body's natural abilities to promote physical and emotional well-being.
